How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World blows Aquaman off top weekend box office spot

The opening weekend of How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World has knocked DC Comics film Aquaman off the weekend box office throne after one week.

The film, which premiered across 473 screens, stars Cate Blanchett, Kit Harington and Gerard Butler. It is the third in its series, and sees viking Hiccup and his dragon, Toothless, work together to combat the darkest threat their village has ever faced.

On its premiere weekend, it made $6.738m, which was slightly more than Aquaman, which made $6.380m across 558 screens.

Aquaman, starring Jason Mamoa, Amber Heard and Nicole Kidman has made a total of $26.963m since its premiere on Boxing Day.

This week also marked the return of Mary Poppins to Australian screens, with the new Disney film Mary Poppins Returns, starring Emily Blunt, Ben Whishaw and Meryl Streep, making $4.057m on its first outing.

A now adult Jane and Michael Banks, and Michael’s three children, are visited by Mary Poppins after a personal loss.

It ran across 521 screens and has made $7.289m since its debut on News Year’s Day.

Other films to perform over the weekend were Ralph Breaks The Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2, which made an additional $2.581m, and Golden Globe winning Bohemian Rhapsody, which added $1.562m to its total earnings. Bohemian Rhapsody has now made $44.590m at the Australian box office.
