HuffPost Australia without an editor, but publisher adamant it does have an editorial team

HuffPost Australia is once again on the hunt for an editor, two months after editor Josh Butler’s exit from the business.

Butler, who left the business to join Ten Daily as a senior reporter, was quickly joined by HuffPost’s senior editor Eoin Blackwell, who joined Ten’s publishing and short-form video play as news editor.

HuffPost Australia does not have a local team

Butler worked with HuffPost Australia since its launch in 2015, and was appointed editor of the US publisher’s Australian arm earlier this year alongside Blackwell. His appointment followed a scale back of HuffPost’s Australian operations, which was announced in November.

The cuts saw more than 30 employees affected, including editor in chief Tory Maguire and CEO JJ Eastwood.

The exits leave HuffPost Australia without a news team, as it looks for a replacement. Mumbrella understands the only official editorial team member based in Sydney is an American staffer who sends overnight stories to the US.

A spokesperson for HuffPost would not directly respond to Mumbrella’s question, which asked how the Australian team was operating given the final two editors had left the business and it had ripped out 30 jobs last year, despite claims of a “stand-alone Australian edition”.

“We have an editorial team in Australia reporting on the stories that our readers have come to love and it’s a team we are looking to expand,” the spokesperson told Mumbrella.

“We would welcome any interested applicants who are passionate about HuffPost and our values and in joining a truly global newsroom.

“At HuffPost we are constantly looking at new ways to bring our audience the most thoughtful, diverse and provocative points of view producing content and covering news 24 hours a day following the sun as it travels around the globe.”

When Mumbrella asked how many staff members were in the editorial team, the spokesperson could not provide a number.
