‘I’m sepsis susceptible and susceptible to sepsis’: Sepsis Australia launches tongue twister challenge via FleishmanHillard and TBWA Sydney

Ahead of World Sepsis Day (13 September), Sepsis Australia has launched a social media campaign prompting Aussies to attempt a tongue twister to raise awareness about the life-threatening condition.

Launched by FleishmanHillard and TBWA Sydney, the tongue twister “I’m sepsis susceptible and susceptible to sepsis,” hopes to educate people about the condition that claims the lives of 8,700 people nationwide each year.

Sepsis Australia professorial fellow professor Simon Finfer AO said the challenge aims to raise awareness of the danger of sepsis by encouraging people to ask, Could it be sepsis?

“With a devastating 1-in-3 death rate, sepsis kills two-and-a-half times as many Australians as prostate and breast cancer, yet data reveals that only 61% of Australians have heard of sepsis, and a mere 23% are aware of sepsis symptoms.”

Anna McEvoy, who was diagnosed with sepsis, added: “It sounds unbelievable when I say it started with a UTI, but it happened, and it could happen to you.

“I got lucky and have made a full recovery, but if I waited any longer to go to the ER, then it could’ve been a very different outcome.”

Fleishman Hillard and TBWA Sydney executive creative director Russ Tucker said: “Having lost my dad to sepsis, a condition I’d previously never heard of, I’m happy to see the idea is already earning attention in Australia and beyond.”

In addition to social media, earned coverage and influencer engagement of the challenge has expanded the campaign’s reach, including global headlines in The New York Post and People Magazine.
