Nine names former Fox Sports and Daily Mail Aus editor as Tory Maguire’s replacement

Nine Entertainment Co has today announced its new metro mastheads’ executive editor, following Tory Maguire’s promotion to publishing managing director last week.

Former Fox Sports executive editor Luke McIlveen has been appointed to lead the mastheads.

“I’m thrilled and honoured to be leading the talented team of editors and journalists at The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, Brisbane Times and WA Today,” McIlveen said.

“Nine’s metros represent Australian journalism at its very best across all platforms – and I look forward to building on that momentum.”

He has held high profile and senior roles across various media outlets for over 25 years, including The Australian, The Daily Telegraph, The Manly Daily and news.com.au.

Under a joint venture with Nine, McIlveen was the founding editor of The Daily Mail Australia before his most recent role as executive editor at Fox Sports, where he oversaw sports broadcasts, panel shows, talent management and digital news.

Outgoing Nine executive editor, Maguire, said: “Luke is one of Australia’s most senior and experienced editors, and has forged a well-deserved reputation as an industry stand-out when it comes to digital audience expertise.

“He has a proven track-record leading newsrooms to exceed their targets and is perfectly placed to help drive the continued transformation, innovation and high-quality journalism Nine’s metro mastheads have achieved in recent years,” she said. “I’m delighted he has agreed to join the team.”

Last week, Maguire was promoted to replace James Chessell in the managing director role, after two years in the executive editor position.

Nine CEO Mike Sneesby described Maguire as “a great executive, who has overseen renewal in our metro mastheads and has made some tough and brave calls about public interest journalism”.

McIlveen will start the role on January 29, and will be based in Sydney.
