Innovative, comfortable, convenient smoke-filled cockpits
You can’t blame Boeing for taking out full page ads to congratulate its customer Qantas on its 90th birthday.
The aircraft manufacturer may regret the placement of its ad in today’s Daily Telegraph though.
The ad on page 8 talks of being “on the leading edge of innovation, making the flying experience more comfortable and convenient”.
The previous page’s lead item features the story of smoke filling the cockpit of a Qantas Boeing 747, forcing it to dump fuel and return to Sydney to a reception from emergency services.
At least the ad in The Sydney Morning Herald allows a decent interval between the page 2 story and the page 15 congratulatory ad.
the media and public have not linked qantas a380 incident to concorde accident.
this was an EXTREMELY lucky ending: punctured fuel tank over hot engine (explosive hot engine at that).
speak to any expert and have this confirmed: this thing could have turned into a massive fireball with no chance of survival.
made the connection to concorde yet!!

It could have … and it didn’t.

SHUT DOWN!

The A380 had nothing to do with an explosion. A fan blade came off, and burst through the engine cowling. It couldn’t have “turned in to a massive fireball.”

The only similarity to Concorde is that they are both planes. Please educate yourself before making clueless ACA-esque statements.

Brett, it was worse than you think. it wasn’t just a fan blade, it was a complete bearing housing failure on the high pressure turbine – the entire disk shattered and penetrated the wing, opening a fuel leak, disabling one hydraulic system etc.
Almost a smoking hole that, very lucky.

Gary. You have an accurate handle on the impact and severity. However the situation has no parallel to Concorde. Any failure is potentially catastrophic and no aircraft is invulnerable.
I loathe Qantas but to ignore the reality that any emergency where all walk down the stairs is a good thing, is scare-mongering.
Suggest initial poster wanders over to Pprune site where such conversations are more relevant.

Oh yeah AdGrunt I agree, no parallel with Concorde at all. Great job by the QF aircrew bringing the aircraft down safely.
Anyway back on topic – I wager the average punter couldn’t tell the difference between a 747 and a lawn dart, so no harm done from ad placement I wager. It’s all QF, Airbus and RR as the villains at the moment.

More importantly….lawn darts. Whatever happened to them? They were fantastic.
