Dr Mumbo

‘It’s a rip off’

Mitsubishi’s ‘It’s a Mitsi’ campaign has been accused of some taking some inspiration from the ‘I bought a Jeep ‘ campaign.

Well now it would seem the campaign is borrowing quite liberally from VW.

Specifically a 1980s spot starring Belgian motor racing legend Jacky Ickx and world champion skier Andre Arnold racing down a snowy mountain showing off the handling of the Golf GTI in the treacherous conditions. It ends with the immortal line “now let’s race back to the top”.

Fast forward 35 years and Mitsubishi is launching its new Triton, with a bloke racing a couple of mountain bikers down a big hill, showcasing the handling of the car.

At points it’s almost a shot-for-shot remake, leaving Dr Mumbo to wonder whether the good burghers at Mitsubishi decided to make a homage to the legendary ad.

However VW didn’t have the vision to have a co-driver in with Ickx that he could turn to to reassure by saying “don’t worry mate, it’s a Mitsi”.

And they did slightly tweak the last line as well with the driver saying to the bikers “back to the top?”.

Greatness borrows, genius steals.
