Jackman, Watts and Weaver receive Oscar nominations
Three Australian actors, Hugh Jackman, Naomi Watts and Jacki Weaver have received nominations from the Academy Awards overnight.
Hugh Jackman has received an Oscar nomination for Les Misérables, alongside Daniel Day-Lewis in Lincoln, Bradley Cooper in Silver Linings Playbook, Joaquin Phoenix in The Master and Denzel Washington in Flight.
Naomi Watts was been nominated for her role in the tsunami story The Impossible. Watts has been nominated alongside Beasts of the Southern Wild’s Quvenzhané Wallis, Jennifer Lawrence in Silver Linings Playbook, Jessica Chastain in Zero Dark Thirty and Emmanuelle Riva in Amour.
Jacki Weaver has also picked up a nomination for Silver Linings Playbook. She is in a category with Helen Hunt in The Sessions, Anne Hathaway in Les Misérables, Sally Field in Lincoln and Amy Adams in The Master.
Why is this relevant for this site? There seems to be a lot of “pop culture” posts for what I thought to be a site about advertising & media…
Hi Ryan,
“Everything under the media, marketing and entertainment umbrella”.
Also, it’s a quiet news day.

Ryan B. you sound like you’d be a lot of fun at a party. Chill, bro!
Two notable omissions from the Oscars race is Neil Finn’s “Song of the Lonely Mountain” from ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’ and Keith Urban’s “For You” from ‘Act of Valour’. The omission of Finn in particular, from the Academy Award for Best Original Song category, is a disgrace IMO.
I think the greatest chance we have in the acting gongs is Naomi. I have seen ZDT (Good film, not worth the hype, even IMDB users agree) but I thought Jessica’s portrayal was quite standard. Only the beginning scenes (once you see, you will know) show some sort of character strength, beyond that all the characters are pretty much the same.
Yet to see Silver Linings, seems Jennifer is the front-runner and I wouldn’t mind seeing such a young talent take the award – but I think beyond her, Naomi’s performance seems the most powerful from the nominations.
Hugh seems to be sadly overshadowed again by Daniel. And if he doesn’t win, it seems people are talking more about Bradley Cooper or Joaquin than Hugh.
