Why do rip-offs never better the originals? Dos Equis – ‘The Most Dangerous Man in The World’ is the clear case in point here.
Kind of like Oasis compared to The Beatles. Enjoyable for a while, but ultimately shallow and forgettable.
Still, it’ll probably work well. Its not like the audience will know.

mock-serious man monologuing to camera about what makes a man, while he walks around a highly stylised set, is very very Old Spice circa Bruce Campbell.

This whole genre is becoming seriously overplayed.

It’s a bit “Old Spice meets Jack Donaghy” but I really like this. Great execution.

Don Draper vs Jack Donaghy vs Old Spice guy
But it’s still funny – nice one.

Love it – Old spice meets patrick bateman

There is an air of familiarity of this add, Bruce Campbell meets Don Draper yadda yadda.
But, it’s still funny.

Interesting…does this mean that “Stand Up” could be the new “Keep Walking”?

I was going to make the comparison to Bruce Campbell’s Old Spice commercials, but it seems like I’m not the only one.
Hail to the king baby.

Love it, comparatively it’s one of the best ads going around at the moment …

Of course . . but I like a bit of pastiche with my whiskey

Familiar or not, who cares, it’s great ad, very entertaining and one I would happily watch again, oh and reengages me with the brand, nice work

I should have also mentioned that there is no ad powerful enough to get me to drink Johnnie Walker….absolute shite.

Very good ad. Funny. Modern Scotch.

I wanted to like this ad, I really did. But in the end, I didn’t.
Too obvious.
Done to death.
Not original.
I can only assume the overwhelming positivity in earlier posts work at Diageo/Leo’s.
I don’t work at Diageo or Leo’s but I’ll consider them if they come knocking 😉

I liked the pace.

Some nice moments, but as a whole it just doesn’t quite land for me.

Or they could have used Alan Partridge instead? Ha Ha

Where’s the idea??

It really needed Alec Baldwin in character as Jack Donaghy. Also if this were just a generic Scotch ad instead of Johnny Walker I’d love it more.
Currently Ardbeg is blowing me away with their direct marketing, I get some very entertaining and well produced mail from them direct from Scotland (or so it says on the envelope).
To be on the Ardbeg committee is quite the honour.

Awesome. It does feel familiar, but still really good. Well done Leo’s

Whisky is a serious drink now? They must not know the Brecht/Weill song ‘Oh Show Us the Way to the Next Whisky Bar’ (‘Oh, don’t ask why, for we must have whisky or we’ll die’ etc). The Robyn Archer recording is hilarious.

Observer, thanks for the tip – gives me an excuse to go & buy some.
I’m still smitten about owning 1 square foot of land on the Laphroaig distillery’s property on Islay.

Compared the Sarah Murdoch on Crack spot this is a winner. Its familiar but still entertaining enough. Great Style.
