Jon Steel, one of the most widely respected planners in advertising, has taken on a consultancy role at independent Perth agency Meerkats.

The appointment will not mean Steel will leave GPY&R, where he is vice chairman and chief strategy officer, and he will spend around three days a month with Meerkats.

Jason Buckley, GPY&R’s COO, told Mumbrella: “Like all large agency networks, we have relationships that extend to various markets and cities. We have an agreement where Meerkats can assist GPY&R in Perth as and when needed.”

“Jon Steel works for WPP, he works with GPY&R, and as he is based in Perth, GPY&R have an agreement with Meerkats for Jon to provide some limited consulting services,” he said.

Meerkats managing director Gavin Bain said Steel would be working on certain projects. “We think Jon will add lots of value for the agency, not only on client briefs, but with staff training and motivation,” he said.

“We have a good relationship with GPY&R and the plan has worked out well,” he added.

A WA agency scored another planning coup in March last year, when Naked Communications co-founder John Harlow moved to The Brand Agency.
