Julie Burke appointed as Euro RSCG Sydney MD

Euro RSCG has hired former BMF group account director Julie Burke as managing director of its Sydney office. The American returns to work in Australia after two years at Fallon Minneapolis in the US where she was head of planning.

Burke, who starts today, is the final part of a management quartet made up of the newly recruited executive creative director Steve Coll (pictured, left) and head of planning Phil Johnston (pictured, far right), who report to group chief executive of Euro RSCG Australia, Anthony Gregorio.

“I’ve been back in Australia for four months, traveling. I wanted a clear ahead before I decided to jump back in to the industry,” said Burke. “It had to feel right.

“I’m part of a new management team, and that’s exciting. I have the chance to be part of building something new.”

Top of Burke’s to-do list is to make Euro RSCG Sydney “a desired brand” for employees, future employees and clients.

“According to the recruiter Nick Williams, we’re not in the top five agencies people want to work for. And we should be,” she said.

Prior to her time at Fallon, Burke was chief strategy officer at Carmichael Lynch in the US. Before that, she has had spells as group account director at Lowe Hunt, BWM and McCann Erickson.

She also worked at Bartle Bogle Hegarty in New York where she was head of account management.

At BMF, she ran accounts including ING Direct, Australian Meat and Livestock, Ella Bache, IKEA and Dairy Farmers.

“Sydney is where I call home. It’s a far more vibrant, globally aware place than the midwest. And creatively that shows through,” she added.

“I’ve come back to find an industry that has grown up a bit. Of course it’s still very competitive. But there’s less of the sense that people put others down to get ahead.”

Anthony Gregorio commented: “Julie is smart and savvy, has planning and account management experience and has worked at some of the best agencies in the world.  She’s a world class appointment.”
