Junkee appoints first editorial team members for Netflix account

Junkee has made its first editorial hires since winning the social media and content account for Netflix ANZ.

Melanie Mahony has joined as managing editor, alongside Dean Nye as editor, James Anthony as AV editor and Jenna Guillaume as a part-time senior contributor. The publisher is still looking for a culture editor.

Mahony returns to Junkee after spending six years with the business. She was the native editor on Sound Alliance before it was rebranded to Junkee and left the business after over a year as the manager of Junkee Studio.

Following her time with Junkee, Mahony spent time at Nine as a strategist, then as a senior strategist at Vice Media’s agency Virtue. Mahony’s most recent role was as business and strategy director with Thinking Loud.

Nye joins after two years at Nine where he was head of social for lifestyle content. Prior to this, Nye worked with Buzzfeed for three years in its social department – a role he took after almost six years at Nine working as a social media producer.

Anthony has worked with Junkee for several years, primarily as a video editor on Punkee where he worked on the popular reality show recaps. He has moved across to the Netflix team to work on the AV content for the account.

Guillame is an author and freelance journalist whose work has appeared in Buzzfeed, Junkee, The Sydney Morning Herald and The Guardian. She will work part-time on Netflix ANZ content and continue her work elsewhere as a freelance journalist.

Junkee’s appointment on the Netflix ANZ anoint was announced earlier this year after a competitive pitch process in 2019. The team will work on the Netflix account creating both social content, but also in-depth long-form editorial. Junkee’s remit also includes the Netflix ANZ Facebook and Instagram accounts.
