The Australian Radio Network (ARN) has defended as “standard practice” Kiis FM breakfast presenters Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson asking listeners to call in to play competitions and take part in phone-ins for yesterday’s pre-recorded show.

From this morning the pair have been broadcasting live from Dubai as part of a cross-promotion with the local tourism board, but flew out to the emirate on Sunday and pre-recorded yesterday’s show in advance.

The first segment of yesterday’s show asked listeners to phone in to guess “what’s in Jackie’s mouth”, and then for other segments including  a phone in with a psychic and the regular pop quiz.

ARN said members of the public heard on air yesterday were “genuine callers who either rang the show for previous competitions late last week and missed out so were offered a second opportunity, or are VIP K&J fans who have registered online at the KIIS website”.

During the pre-recorded show, which featured an interview with X-Men star Hugh Jackman, the pair continually referenced the fact they were flying out after the show had finished, teasing Intern Pete that he was not coming with them, before rewarding him with a ticket at the end of the show.

Pictures posted to Instagram the night before show Jackie Henderson posing with user and travel blogger @doyleair on Sunday evening on the airplane.

A spokeswoman for ARN defended the practice adding: “Show producers are always mindful of giving the hundreds of callers to the show every day the best possible experience, and are also always searching for great content from fans which is used on the air, at the time the call comes in, or at a future time that best fits.

Callers to yesterday’s show had their details taken and were asked if they wanted to be involved in today’s show, meanwhile, callers heard yesterday were genuine callers who either rang the show for previous competitions late last week and missed out so were offered a second opportunity, or are VIP K&J fans who have registered online at the KIIS website.

“This is standard practice for many radio shows around the world and is, and always has been, clearly detailed in the competition T&C’s at the KIIS website – www.kiis1065.com.au/win.”
