Kyle and Jackie O’s war on everyone
It was the first day back on air for Kyle Sandilands and Jackie Henderson, but the KiisFM Sydney breakfast duo wasted no time in starting a flame war with radio rivals Nova.
It all began with Kyle asking who reads the news on rival 2DayFM, and descended from there.
Kiis newsreader Brooklyn Ross told Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O that he had heard that Nova newsreader Matt DeGroot had been “saying shit about the newsreaders on Kiis”, it’s fair to say the duo didn’t take things lying down…
In fact Kyle and Jackie O rang the Nova switchboard and then demand to speak to DeGroot, who at the time was reading the news.
Interestingly they go through to Nova producer Ben, a former employee of Kiis, who managed to get some good jibes in on how the Kiis traffic news was an hour and a half old, while King Kyle bemoaned being put on hold.
DeGroot was unfortunately “too busy” to go on a rival station to get shouted at, so Kyle tried Paul Jackson the head of content for Nova’s personal mobile and ended up getting through to voicemail.
Kyle left a message for Jackson asking him to stop DeGroot “taking shit” about Brooklyn and promising there would be “blood on the dancefloor”, before asking Nova producer Ben if he wanted to say anything to his boss.
On cue and on message Dave made sure to congratulate his boss on the previous week’s stellar radio ratings for Nova in survey four, which saw their breakfast duo Fitzy and Wippa move into second spot behind Kyle and Jackie O in the FM charts.
Sandilands then responds: “They (normally) don’t get to speak to their bosses. The guy’s in a different country and at Smooth no-one is even on-air. How does Smooth get such good ratings when it’s all just prerecorded shit from a year ago? It’s all very weird, apparently the cafes have Smooth on.”
Smooth of course knocked Kiis from the top FM station spot in Sydney in the last survey.
Kyle also then asked the producers to try and get Cathy O’Connor CEO of Nova on the line questioning whether Jackson might be sleeping in.
“Obviously the head of programming is not up,” said Sandilands. “It’s only 20 minutes to Nine, having a sleep-in, you get one half decent survey with half your shows and you think you can kick back.”
Before making a joke about “flicking” O’Connors’ jelly beans, after insinuating the pair of them had been close once upon a time.
Jackie O did a good job of summarising the segment noting: “Geez its the first day back and we’ve really declared war on everyone.”
Dr Mumbo can’t help but wonder if the folks at Kiis are starting to get a little antsy about a resurgent Nova.
Where is the outrage machine on this one?
This is blatant bullying across the industry. Not to mention completely inappropriate ‘jokes’ about “flicking the bean” of one of the industry’s most successful and decent women.
Whatever the Nova news reader (allegedly) said to a class behind closed doors, he shouldn’t have to face this kind of bullying on air across a major broadcast network.

Staggering to understand how these buffoons are number one in Sydney. I mean, aside from the obvious, what punter gives a toss about radio politics?

No outrage machine on this one. Destroy the Joint is too busy listening to triple M and Alan Jones.
