Labor Party advertises for editor for new ‘Crikey style’ news service

LaborThe Australian Labor Party (ALP) has hit its fundraising goal and started advertised for a “senior editor” to head up its daily online service, which the political party has described as its “own Crikey.”

The advertisement, posted this afternoon, calls for applicants capable of “writing, commissioning and presenting a complete news, features, commentary and information service to our direct audience of around 500,000 via email and social media.”

Last month, Labor national secretary George Wright announced in an email to members and supporters that the major political party was looking for subscribers to the “new online Labor Herald news service”, which at its launch will have one editor.

The new job advertisement make clear that the aim of the news service is around presenting content that will engage a readership beyond Labor’s supporters.

“It is our aim to revitalise our content, creating a vibrant and innovative media presence, impacting not just on our supporter base, but on broader Australian society,” the ad says.

According to the ad the successful applicant will have strong online skills, and will likely be based in Canberra, “working closely with Labor’s executive and administration”.

The announcement of the news service saw much derision on social media with the national secretary in a letter to members after the event writing: “Did you see how the conservatives on Twitter jumped up and down when they heard we were fundraising for an editor for our new online Labor Herald?”

The ALP is seeking $22.60 per subscriber a month to fund the news service which will have one editor and a budget of $95,000 a year.
