Lion roars ahead in its box office debut as XXX franchise returns
‘Lion’, based on the non-fiction book by Saroo Brierley, and starring Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman, has reached the top of the box office on its opening weekend.
‘Lion’, released by Transmission Films, easily banked more than $4 million to secure the #1 position. The film tells the story of Saroo, played by Dev Patel, and his journey to find his biological parents as an adult after being adopted by Nicole Kidman’s character, Sue.
‘XXX 3: The Return of Xander Cage’, released by Paramount, debuted at #2 at the box office with $2.9 million. XXX 3, a re-boot featuring Vin Diesel reprising his role as the franchise’s action star Xander Cage is about recovering a CIA device that causes satellites to become warheads.
In third place was Universal’s ‘Sing’, which earned $1.6 million to tick over $25 million since its release on December 26, 2016.
‘Moana’, Disney’s latest animation starring the voice and likeness of Dwayne Johnson, earned $1.5 million at the box office.
Fifth place was taken out by Golden Globe musical ‘La La Land’ which achieved $1.3 million for a total of $13 million plus.
