Marketing Marvel’s nemesis
This week News Corp announced its latest promotion, a comic book partnership with Marvel which will see three million comic books given away with its newspapers.
To complement the launch, News sent out some pictures including this adorable image of children dressed as superheroes, from one of News’ launch events.
Unfortunately it didn’t take eagle-eyed readers long to spot that most of these youngsters have gone quite off brief – with five of the seven wearing the costumes of DC Comics characters, Marvel’s arch nemesis (to use comic book parlance).
For those not acquainted with the intricacies of the various comic characters you have (left to right) Superman (DC Comics), Supergirl (DC Comics), Hulk (Marvel), a second Supergirl, followed by Spiderman (Marvel), Wonder Woman (DC Comics) and then Batman (DC Comics).
Marvel is now owned by Disney, while its rival DC Comics is owned by Warner Brothers. Perhaps the marketing team was gearing up for a DC promotion at some point in the future?
The kids came as their favourite superheroes. My daughter was going to come as Elsa. Try censor a toddler about what they want to wear. For the record the families that attended had a great time regardless of which superhero/Frozen princess they associated with.

It doesn’t matter what the child “wants” to wear… the images should have been screened/vetted for the purposes of advertising Marvel (irrespective of the event they were taken from)… this is an epic fail in advertising for news corp as far as I’m concerned.
