Media companies react to marriage equality ‘Yes’ vote

Following the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ announcement yesterday that Australians had voted in favour of same-sex marriage, media companies were quick to show their support.

Yesterday, Pacific Magazines Marie Claire unveiled a limited-edition cover wrap to celebrate the “yes” vote announcement.

Nicky Briger, Marie Claire’s editor said the publication believes every couple has the right to marry.

“Right now, champagne corks are popping across the country as we take the first step towards joining the 760 million people currently living in countries where same-sex marriage is legal,” Briger said.

The publication will be on sale today, and follows the brand’s ‘I Do’ campaign in 2012 – a petition signed by 170,000 readers.

Marie Claire was also involved in Airbnb’s Until We All Belong Initiative.

“Australia has spoken and now it’s time to celebrate. We should acknowledge and thank the people and organisations who have dedicated much of their lives to see this through,” Briger added.

“Today their tireless work should be applauded.”

Over at News Corp, news.com.au has put a plug at the top of its page – giving readers the chance to post their congratulations on the result.

Bauer Media has tweaked the name of its digital platform Now to Love – with the word ‘Yes’ in rainbow replacing Now.

The publisher’s Cosmopolitan magazine has created a rainbow backdrop for the top of its website.

News Corp’s The Daily Telegraph splashed its dour front page with the headlines ‘Now we can all share the joy’ and referred to op-eds from conservative columnists Miranda Devine and Mark Latham.

The Herald Sun featured Magda Szubanski and Ian Thorpe on the cover.

And The Australian‘s front page was dominated with the news – the headline reading ‘Nation says Yes’.

And over at Fairfax Media, the Sydney Morning Herald led its paper with a rainbow flag and the words ‘Yes’.

Up in The Northern Territory, NT News was decked out with all the colours of the rainbow and the word ‘Yes’.

The Canberra Times‘ editorial cartoonist David Pope captured the news in his own way.

The Canberra Times itself mirrored other titles, with the word Yes splashed across the front.

Melbourne’s The Age followed suit.

On Kiis 1065, Kyle and Jackie O have announced callers during tomorrow’s breakfast will all receive a ‘Free Gay Wedding’. The venue will be provided by HostCo and Gardens on Forest, rings provided by Dracakis Jewellers and the ceremony to be run by Simple Ceremonies.

Meanwhile, The Marriage Alliance has told supporters they will continue to fight against the reforms following the ‘Yes’ vote’s survey win today, arguing “huge media bias” and a “widespread attack on supporters” were reasons the No vote did not get over the line.

Australians voted 61.6% in favour of same sex marriage, while 38.4% voted No, the ABS found.
