MediaCom appoints Fiona Johnston to senior marketing role

GroupM media agency MediaCom has appointed Fiona Johnston to chief business development and marketing officer.

The role will see Johnston work closely with Toby Jenner, executive chairman, and Mark Pejic, CEO.

Jo Wilson, currently manager of business development and marketing, will report into Johnston.

Jenner told Mumbrella: “Fiona will be one of the key leaders taking our business forward and will be on our national board.”

MediaCom is claiming a media agency first in placing a marketing person at this level of seniority. “I’m not aware of a marketing role at this level in other media agencies,” Jenner said.

Having previously set up her own executive coaching business – called Mate Coaching – and working with training firm Wentworth People, Johnston has in the past worked alongside MediaCom, as well as Coca-Cola Asia-Pacific, DGM, OMD and the Mitchells Group.

Toby Jenner said in a statement: “Fiona has had a number of senior creative agency leadership roles in the UK and Australia, including Euro RSCG, Publicis Mojo and Lowe Hunt Draft. As a result she knows what good work looks like and understands the importance of a brand. More importantly she knows MediaCom. Fiona has for the last couple of years worked with us as an executive coach, as such she knows our business, the journey we’re on and has been a key part of our success to date. She’ll be a fantastic addition to a top class team.”

Johnston added: “After working through a key period with MediaCom supporting the development and evolution of their business and people, it feels like a very natural transition to get more involved and help continue the journey MediaCom is on.”

The news follows appointment of Evelina Lye as marketing manager of sibling GroupM agency Mindshare in November last year.

Greg Graham, GroupM’s marketing and new business director, told Mumbrella that similar roles could be introduced to the other two GroupM brands, Maxus and MEC.

“I’m not ruling it out. We believe marketing and communication roles are important at GroupM,” he said.
