Jason Scott appointed MD of News Queensland
Jason Scott, managing director of The Sunday Times in Perth has been appointed MD of News Queensland.
Scott will report to Jerry Harris, former MD of News Queensland and now News Limited’s MD, group newspapers and digital products.
The appointment is effective as of Monday 30 January and will cover The Courier-Mail, The Sunday Mail, The Cairns Post, the Townsville Bulletin and The Gold Coast Bulletin.
Scott was appointed to his Perth role in January 2010 from general manager of North Queensland Newspapers during a major restructure of News Limited’s Australian operations.
Kim Williams, CEO of News Limited, said in a statement: “Jason is one of our most talented young executives and I am delighted that he has agreed to take on this significant new responsibility.”
Scott said: “Under Jerry’s leadership News Queensland has built some of the most trusted news brands in Australia. I am looking forward to the challenge of helping the business chart an exciting future.”
Predictable words from Scott: “Under Jerry’s leadership..etc..etc” The facts may tell a different story. The glory days of News Queensland started slipping away with the departure of John Cowley in 2001. His parting shot: “I’ll give them ten years.” Spot on! Cowley’s successor, Jerry Harris, loaded News Q into a tumbrel and wheeled it to the very steps of the guillotine. The whisper is that the Courier-Mail, The Sunday Mail and the Gold Coast Bulletin will unite under one masthead. Whatever happens, Scott will need a miracle to not only halt the fall of the blade, but the disastrous fall in the circulation of all three newspapers.
