Melbourne radio ratings: Christian O’Connell bucks FM downturn as Ross and Russel stay #1

AM radio had strong results in Melbourne, as lockdowns continued to provide a boost to talkback, with #1 breakfast show Ross and Russel adding to their already significant lead.

Ross and Russel climbed 0.7 percentage points to reach a 20.8% share of listening, while ABC’s Sammy J enjoyed an even bigger boost, up 2.2 points to 16%, climbing further into outright second.

3AW remained #1 overall despite a slight 0.4 point dip to 15.1%, while ABC Melbourne climbed overall by 1.3 points to 12.4%.

Melbourne’s FM stations and breakfast shows either suffered a downturn or remained flat this GfK survey, but Gold 104.3’s Christian O’Connell bucked the trend by climbing 0.3 percentage points.

Survey five took place from Sunday, 23 May to Saturday, 26 June and Sunday, 11 July to Saturday, 14 August.

O’Connell cemented his spot as the #1 FM show, up to an 8.9% share, and Gold also topped FM overall despite losing 0.4 percentage points to hit 10%.

This is the 10th consecutive survey that O’Connell has held the FM breakfast title, and the 13th consecutive survey that Gold has held its overall FM spot.

The hardest hit was KIIS 101.1, with new breakfast show Jase and Lauren losing 1.6 percentage points to hit a 4.6% share in the wake of the departure of PJ Harding.

It was a tough book for Triple M’s Marty Sheargold too, with his new-for-2021 breakfast show dropping 0.8 points to 3.8%.

Melbourne Radio Ratings – Survey #5 2021

ABC Melbourne’s Rafael Epstein had a 1.5 point jump in drive, but had to settle for a top spot tie with 3AW’s Tom Elliot. Both shows finished with an 11.7% share.

Gold’s Gavin Miller has the only FM show to rate in double digits on drive, holding a 10.7% share.

Survey five took place from Sunday, 23 May to Saturday, 26 June and Sunday, 11 July to Saturday, 14 August.
