Metro commercial radio revenues creep up in 2018

Ad revenue for metropolitan commercial radio grew 3.4% in 2018, claims data compiled by Deloitte and Commercial Radio Australia.

Revenues for the year rose 3.4% to $809.4m across the five metro markets with Melbourne seeing the strongest growth on bookings worth $259.9m.

The CRA’s Joan Warner: “The industry worked hard throughout 2018 to continue to attract advertisers and listeners”

Of the other markets, Sydney rose 1.35% to $248.7m and Brisbane was up 2.42% to $125.3m. Perth recorded a 1.15% increase to $106.1m and Adelaide rose 1.21% to $69.5m.

In 2016, the year’s metro ad revenue was up 4.04% to $780m.

The Deloitte figures report actual revenue received by metropolitan commercial radio stations and include all metropolitan agency and direct revenue.

CRA chief executive officer, Joan Warner said: “The industry worked hard throughout 2018 to continue to attract advertisers and listeners, making buying radio easier through the automated holdings system and listening even more accessible via RadioApp, DAB+, FM or AM, in the car on the phone and through smart speakers.”
