Miranda’s Devine’s back – like she was never gone
Miranda Devine began her new stint at News Ltd today with her first column in Sydney’s Daily Telegraph.
And like a great rock band of the 80s, Dr Mumbo was delighted to see that she was happy to go straight into the crowd-pleasing greatest hits rather than the new material.
So it was straight to the evils of greens, based on the shock value of this banned ad from the UK.
“Stand in the way of our plans and we will eliminate you”, is the policy of the green movement, Devine informs her readers.
And for those who miss her balanced tones, she went for the double whammy with a piece on teen promiscuity (it’s a bad thing.)
Adn this morning, she added her own nuance to the AFL debate and Kerri-Anne Kennerley’s comments. Apparently “The linguistic police are always so eager to crush dissent that most celebrities buckle under the pressure.”
Curiously, her column has not yet taken off online in the way Devine’s bosses would have hoped. By mid afternoon, the greens item had only 25 comments on her blog and a further 19 comments on the Tele’s website.
Nobody reads the Tele unless its Sport or the front page. I thought the rest was just Piers Akerman and ads. Never actually looked.

Any evidence that she sells newspapers? Has the SMH seen a decline in readership (or more than you might expect in a dying medium?)
As a guess, she is there to support the liberal party, the editorial team can put it down to a columnists rants if it is hugely biased, the internet will find her out, if no-one can be bothered to find out what she has to say then she is sunk.

A breath of fresh air at last, Go Miranda!
An interesting post from Joe Talcott, re, R.U. OK day.
Miranda was kind enough to do a story on the suicide of one of the many builders
who have committed suicide over Home Warranty insurance. (HWI)
20,000 out of 34,000 builders cannot get this useless Insurance, More on this,
Manly Daily front page 19th August 2010.
Victorian Essential Services Commission stats,$ 600 Million in income from HWI
$9.1 Million paid out in claims, NSW stats expected to be the same,(not available).
The Northern Hemisphere thaw /solstace resulted in no sea level rise, despite billions of tons of snow and ice melting, the world demands the truth, Miranda is supplying it.

Mat,
Whilst I accept that there is still a lot of blue-collar stuff in the Tele, including the wholly superfluous Form Guide, your anti-Tele comment reads like snobbery.
I don’t know if you’ve realised, but the Sydney Morning Herald has become a total ragsheet. Most readers are rusted on, and would be horrified at the mere thought of reading the Tele, yet base this perception on very old opinions. Give it another go – the Tele has more scoops and real hardball reporting than the Fairfax papers.
Worst case, if the Tele is still too hard, read The Australian, which is simply outstanding. Particularly the Cut and Paste section which shows when the Fairfax papers get it wrong. If you only read Fairfax, you’d never know.

@Dan Lewis – pull the other leg, it jingles. The Tele is nothing more than a trumped up Womans Day crossed with the Liberal Party newsletter, that happens to have a sports section at the back. There is no balanced reporting, just fear mongering and sensationalist dross. It is written to a year 9 reading level for a reason – its target audience are the uneducated and easily influenced. I am not saying Fairfax is the bastion of truth as it is clearly not, but any person with a semblance of functioning gray matter would scoff at you trying to defend such a steaming pile of turd. Nobody of any intellect or importance pays ANY attention to the Tele, it’s merely a comedic interlude after catching up on the news.
All you have done is publicly out yourself as part of the unwashed and uninformed.

I cannot tell you how relieved I am MD has gone from Fairfax. Her so called columns dragged down the quality of the paper. My fondest memory was her piece on how greens are going to have blood on their hands for attempting to prevent shark culling, pointing out “humans are water based creatures too you know – have you been to a beach on a summers day”, or words to that effect. I contacted Ms Devine a few times directly, my favorite there being her response to my email asking how could she quote a statistic that women “spend 2 hours a week in front of the mirror” as coming from the Australian Bureau of Statistics – a quick google search found it was from a Napoleon Perdis press release and had she had ripped the stat off a ‘story’ from West Australian newspaper “what’s the fascination with my articles – if you don’t like them, don’t read them”…

Hey Keith, when I want a bathroom renovated, I’ll talk to you. When I want to know what’s happening with the world’s climate, I think we’d prefer to hear from someone who actually knows a thing or two about climatology, oceanography etc. etc.
