AdWeek: Apple’s New Openness to Ad Blockers Threatens to Remove Publishers’ Mobile Ads

Apple unveils its new iPhone and iOS 9 operating system this week, it could also drop a bomb on publishers by opening the door to ad-blocking technology on its massively popular mobile devices.

Ad blockers have been available on desktop browsers for years, but analysts say Apple’s backing has the potential to make ad blocking more mainstream, making it available to a wider group of consumers.

With Apple’s new tools, developers can build ad-blocking apps that consumers can download to wipe out ads on mobile sites when using Apple’s built-in Safari browser.

AdAge: Marketers Seeking Solutions to Ad-Blocking — Carefully

The nation’s largest advertisers are seeking solutions, technical and otherwise, to combat a new threat to the Internet, a growing movement to block their ads.

Dan Jaffe, the top lobbyist for the Association of National Advertisers, said it’s a delicate situation that calls for a carefully thought out solution. That isn’t within reach yet – even as ad blocking has erupted as a major problem.

Up to now, publishers have been the most worried about tools that strip their sites of ads, but among marketers, “concerns are growing,” Mr. Jaffe said.

The Samaritans of Singapore has launched a campaign this week to start a conversation around suicide.

The creative idea, devised by TBWA\Singapore, centres around a plaster that the charity is asking Singaporeans to wear on their inner wrists that carries the hashtag #howru.
