Netflix may have revolutionized how we watch TV, but it’s not stopping there.

Working again with Pittsburgh-based agency Deeplocal, the streaming company just released another do-it-yourself invention. This time, it’s a pair of socks that detect when you’ve fallen asleep and pause your program so you don’t miss out.

Marks & Spencer has continued its “adventures in” campaign with a Christmas ad putting the grocer’s festive food under the spotlight.

Rainey Kelly Campbell Roalfe/Y&R created the spot, which, unlike the rest of the ads in the campaign, will only appear online. This year, M&S consciously moved away from creating a single show-stopper to making several smaller ads, which it believes reflect the prolonged celebrations around Christmas.

Conventional wisdom holds that mass moviegoing is the pastime of another era. The cultural heat emanates from television now. Hollywood churns out only banal sequels and forgettable action films. Netflix is the new multiplex.

Well, the movies just struck back.

In an astounding display of cultural and commercial domination on a global scale — one with little precedent in the 100-year history of Hollywood — the Walt Disney Company’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”earned roughly $517 million in ticket sales worldwide, smashing multiple box office records, even after accounting for inflation.

It’s never been easier to ignore advertising.

Between the growing number of television cord-cutters, the rise of ad blockers and the ongoing struggle to effectively connect with people on their mobile devices, there’s no longer a guarantee that anyone will look at the things advertisers make.

The captive audience they once enjoyed in America’s living rooms is fading fast — a victim to all-consuming changes in the ways people watch television, read the news and browse the web.

Luckily for everyone else, the resulting twinge of panic has emboldened some ad agencies to push to imaginative new heights in an attempt stand apart from the fray.
