Mumbrella live blog: Monday, May 5

Welcome to Mumbrella’s live blog, the rolling media diary of what’s happening in Australia’s media and marketing industries. Refresh the page for more updates.

Top stories:

5:35pm – The Box Office summary is in, and goofy comedy Bad Neighbours has knocked The Other Women off top spot this weekend.

5:22pm – On Friday MediaCom shut down its Sydney office for the day and its staff took to the streets around the city to raise money for the Starlight Appeal which helps sick kids. This year they raised an impressive $48,000 just that day. The office also does all the pro bono work for the appeal. Good work guys and gals.

4:22pm – Is this ad sexualising children? The Ad Standards Board thought so. See why Witchery are upset, and leave your thoughts here.

3:14pm – We didn’t think it would be possible, but the Packer v Gyngell Bondi brawl pictures have lived up to expectation. We see a bare-footed, tracky pants wearing Gyngell confront Packer, wearing a baseball cap, and then get subdued by his bodyguards.

Interesting also to note the excessive watermarking of all the pics by the News Corp staff, clearly keen to protect what we understand was not an inconsiderable outlay.

3:03pm – News Corp have published the exclusve photos of the Gyngell / Packer brawl. These are a must see.

2:57pm – AAMI has released its first campaign since since it scrapped the Rhonda and Ketut love story. See the spot here.

2:14pm – Dr Mumbo has heard the pictures of Bondi Brawlers Packer and Gyngell have been bought by News Corp. There’s also some great memes doing the rounds on social about what it may look like.

1:42pm – Sad news from the world of online news, as the political commentary website New Matilda looks set to close next week. More here.

12:35pm – It’s been confirmed the Packer and Gyngell photos have been sold, but Media Mode have remained stum on who picked them up. I guess we’ll find out for certain very soon.

11.51am – Here at Mumbrella House we’re hearing the Packer and Gyngell photos have been sold. Question now is who bought them News Corp, maybe Seven or could it be Packer himself?

11.28am – Telstra has recruited Jimmy Barnes for its latest campaign promoting its network coverage. The ad is created by DDB. Check out the full story here.

11.14am – The Guardian’s Amanda Meade is now reporting that the Packer Gyngell fight broke out because Packer wrongly believed a Nine news crew in a live satellite van had waited outside his home trying to film Miranda Kerr arriving that morning.

11.05am – A statement has just come out of Nine Entertainment from James Packer and David Gyngell stating:

We have been friends for 35 years and still are.

In that time we have had our fair share of ups and downs.

We respect each other and neither of us will be commenting further.

10.59am – Cute new ad from Compare the Market which again uses the meerkats to sell their insurance. Full story here.

10:31am – Two major local production houses have beefed up their show development departments with CJZ hiring Peep Show actor Matt King and ITV Studios promoting Micah Hewson.

10:17am – It seems the Mail Online has come to the party with the Gyngell v Packer story (see 9:19am), but Dr Mumbo wonders whether we might see interviews from either party on A Current Affair of The Project this evening…

9.19am – If you’re in the Twittersphere you might have noticed that the words Gyngell and Packer have just started trending across Australia. Media reports in both Fairfax and News Corp say that there is a bidding war for photos of James Packer and David Gyngell in what is being described as “explosive photos” showing billionaire gaming mogul James Packer and Nine Entertainment Group  CEO David Gyngell in a physical altercation at Packer’s residence.

It will be interesting to see who gets the photos and also if the Daily Mail, which is in partnership with Nine, enters the bidding war.

Screen Shot 2014-05-05 at 9.19.32 AM9:10am – The first TV ratings are coming in and it’s a very strong start for The Voice on Nine with 2.155m viewers, more than it got for the launch of its second season last year. Initial story here.

8:41am – To the ABC protests which happened on Saturday, with The Australian saying ‘more than 1,000’ turned out, and The Guardian pointing to hundreds of people turning up in Martin Place in Sydney and Federation Square in Melbourne in defence of the public broadcaster. Despite both taking AAP copy for the coverage, there are markedly different angles.

8:35am – The most interesting story in the AFR this morning claims media agency Mitchell & Partners substantially dropped its fees to win the Federal Government media account last month from UM, but says the government is set to take “a razor” to its $160m-a-year ad spend as part of spending cuts. You can see more here, also behind a paywall.

8:21am – It’s Monday, and that means media sections for the Australian Financial review and The Australian. There’s a few stories about today, including the Oz reporting Telstra is using information from people’s 100-point ID checks to target ads on its own network in a bid to boost ad revenues. Read more of it here (behind a paywall).

8:10am – Morning all, welcome back to another week. It seems the media and marketing communities woke up over the weekend, with new shows and a heap of new ads popping up. We’ll be covering these off this morning.
