Mumbrellacast: Media’s most difficult week

It’s been the hardest week the modern media and marketing industries have ever seen. Media owners and agencies are fighting to protect their staff and businesses as COVID-19 has brought Australia to a standstill. Redundancies, forced leave, pay cuts and trading halts: is the industry that is meant to lead in creativity being creative enough in keeping businesses on their feet? Or would it be better to tighten your belts and ride out the storm?

In news some might have been missed in the rapidly changing landscape, the ACCC approved Seven West Media’s sale of Pacific Magazines to Bauer Media. As the two mag giants become one, heads are bound to roll, but will people still be able to go out and buy their favourite titles? The sale of Pac Mags will make for a well-needed cash injection for Seven, after taking a hit with the Olympics being postponed until at least 2021.

And, Mark Ritson and ADMA CEO Andrea Martens join Tim Burrowes to discuss how they have banded together to help marketers working from home improve their skills with a new online course, kicking off on April 20. Ritson and Martens also discuss the good and the bad of marketing during the current crisis and whether consumers will bounce back to how they were, or if they are going to be forever changed.
