Mumbrellacast: OMD splits the hot seat and the Moonman ‘blasts off’
This week on the Mumbrellacast, Olivia Kruimel and Calum Jaspan join host, Damian Francis to break down the week in media and marketing.
Omnicom Media Group appointed OMD managing director, Laura Nice, and OMD chief digital officer, Sian Whitnall as co-CEOs this week, ending several months of industry speculation around who would be replacing Aimee Buchanan who left the agency for GroupM. CEO of Omnicom Media Group, Peter Horgan, said that the appointment of co-CEOs follows “a history of success with leadership partnerships” at OMD and “given the size and scale of OMD Australia, there is no better time to revisit this winning formula”.
The appointments continue a trend at OMD of CEO’s coming from internal promotions with both Buchanan and Peter Horgan before that being promoted into the role. The big talking is whether or not co-CEOs will work for an agency of OMD’s size?At the start of the week, SCA released a very brief message announcing that Triple M Breakfast host Lawrence ‘Moonman’ Mooney had departed the show, with SCA now settling on Mark Geyer alongside Jess Eva and Chris Page as the new host lineup on the Sydney station.
The news comes soon after the departure of Mick Molloy a fortnight ago, with the station then announcing its slate of new ‘Rush Hour’ drive shows locally replacing Molloy. With some pretty big changes to Triple M’s lineup after a year where results have not been particularly great for the station, the fallout from Moonman’s departure seems to be growing. The team discusses the station’s prospects into the new year, and whether the unfolding situation presents wider comments about the value of radio presenters.
Finally, Mumbrella’s Olivia Kruimel talks to Flybuys head of digital, Katie James about dealing with more than a third of Australian’s data, the challenges of COVID, learnings from the split from Coles and the importance of privacy.
