Fox FM refuses to put out last Matt & Jo show podcast featuring attack on management
Fans have questioned why the podcast of the final Matt and Jo show, which featured outspoken comments about Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) management, have not been made available by Fox FM.
In his final broadcast on the long-running breakfast show with Jo Stanley on November 29 Matt Tilley hit out at the culture at SCA, which stopped him from playing his famous “gotcha” prank calls, branded Kyle Sandilands “a bearded lump of cholesterol” and called-out chairman Max Moore-Wilton for his “shit happens” comment to investors.
But, while full versions of their other shows from the week are available on the iTunes feed, the last show has not been put up, with SCA telling fans “technical issues” prevented them putting the show online.
One fan took to Facebook to say:
In the speech Tilley said: “I reckon you beautiful people who listen to the show are being short changed at the moment, because this company quivers under the draconian regulations imposed on us because of the behaviour of that bearded lump of cholesterol Kyle Sandilands.
“The world has changed. It sounds like bongo drums down the corporate corridors of this building as sphincters just slam shut at the thought of another bad story in the press. It’s just too risky.”
He also blasted management for banning him from playing the prank “gotcha” phone calls, claiming it made them “a million bucks” and defending them saying they never tried to exploit people in a mean way”. He also attacked the comments made by Max Moore-Winton around the death of nurse Jacinta Saldanha when he told shareholders “shit happens” in October.
Tilley added: “But I think it sucks that under the shadow of other people’s indiscrepancies this show has just kept working and kept working. More recently our distinguished chairman addressed this malaise with aplomb when he said quite simply “shit happens”.
“Well you know what mate, shit doesn’t just happen. People work really really hard around here to make anything happen and they could do with a bit less callous disregard and a bit more empathy and support I reckon ‘cus you listeners love the work this station produces.”
Then, referring to the 30-second delay imposed on Sandilands and Jackie Henderson by regulators which allowed censors which sit in on the show to “dump” controversial content before it gets to air he added: “You might think shit happens but let me say this, we’re live right now so that’s one dump that will not be happening today.”
You can hear the full audio of the speech on Radio Today from five minutes in.
Despite the outburst SCA has given Tilley a new show with Joe Hildebrand, although one SCA source told Mumbrella it would have been “costly” to pay him out of the final year of his contract. “He’s been on Fox since 1990, so you can imagine he’s on a pretty good package”, they added.
On the same day Sandilands also took a swing at management as he left for rival Australian Radio Network’s new Kiis 1065 breakfast spot saying: “We’ve loved it here. God we’ve made millions of dollars out of these people. Thank you very much. And we’ve made this company hundreds of millions too, so don’t worry about that.”
None of the Kyle and Jackie O show podcasts are now available on iTunes.
SCA declined to answer questions from Mumbrella as to why the podcast has not been made available, with a spokeswoman stating: “Our focus is on the new show and what’s in store for 2014. Our fans of the 2013 shows have an enormous amount of content from their years on air it’s not all about the final few hours on air.”
SCA sounds like the Liberals – not adult enough to face reality.

Matt never said that those calls “made them (management) a million bucks” – he said it was a million dollars they made for charity. Several other direct quotes have been augmented to make things seem a bit more dramatic too. Naughty, naughty Mumbrella!

Good to see FOX FM is such a great defender of free speech. The bullies with the glass jaws.

Hi Mumbo Jumbo,
The exact quote (at 6 minutes in if you click on the audio) is: “The story today is we raised nearly a million bucks with those Gotcha CDs. Not a single scandal was had, and for seven years people tuned in and laughed and the ratings followed, and the cash registers tinkled and the shareholders were delighted.”
Tilley doesn’t mention charity in there.
If you care to point out any other quotes you feel have been augmented I’d be happy to check and verify, but it’s not our practice, these speak for themselves.
Cheers,
Alex, Editor, Mumbrella
You know there might not have been a scandal but a lot of people were pretty unimpressed with his accents and brown face on the cds.
I believe the gotcha call cds were if not entirely or at least in part for charity.

You can find the speech on radiotoday’s website. I think it’s one of the best sign off speeches I’ve ever heard. Articulate, humorous and from the heart!

Well said Matt

@client. The obvious difference being that SCA are in power and Mat is not. When our ‘leaders’ (in media and govt) act no better than spoilt little brats who will admit no error, it really isn’t leadership any of us should acknowledge as ‘leaders’. That goes for both sides of the house – I highlighted the Liberals as they are the ones currently in power. If our political leaders had higher standards and admitted making mistakes, maybe that would encourage business to be more open. Instead we have a bald-faced lie about ‘technical issues’. Similar to the promises broken since the election, hence the comparison. Have a go at the ALP all you want but they’re not the issue on the table. And I didn’t vote for either of them! Nor do I listen to the ‘lowest common denominator’ that Kyle and Jackie O represent. Too vacuous for my taste.

Yep, that’s right Alex, the word was “raised” and the “them” you used in your story was about management – no mention about that in the context of the speech. You don’t really “raise” money for management! As for seeing out his contract, my understanding is that expired this year. Now isn’t that odd.

@ schoolg…you say “The obvious difference being that SCA are in power and Mat is not. When our ‘leaders’ (in media and govt) act no better than spoilt little brats who will admit no error, it really isn’t leadership any of us should acknowledge as ‘leaders’…….Sorry all I hear is “victim mentality ” . Matt controls his “labour”. If he doesn’t like the way his leaders lead…..don’t sit there and whine, while still accepting the fat pay packet…leave! I see massive hypocrisy in his behavior.

@client If that’s all you can hear, it might be time to reposition yourself.

@client To follow your line of thinking, any govt employee not happy with the Libs leading should quit their job and stop taking pay, as it is hypocritical..? If everyone not happy with their bosses quit, the economy would go down the drain. BTW when I was lead video producer for SAPOL and Commissione Hyde ordered me to act in a manner that breached anti-corruption policy, I said no. I’ve since been ostracised, assaulted by SAPOL, and now have to manage PTSD. However, I made a stand for what was ‘right’. With all your talk of hypocrisy, have you actually stood up to be counted?

If you heard the final Matt and Jo Show they had a segment just before 8am with the collected charities that were helped by the show while it was on and part of that segment was that they had all the heads of various charities on to say thanks for all they raised, they mentioned that the money from the Gotcha Call CD’s went to places like the Mercy Hospital, The Royal Womens Hospital and a heap of families and community groups who were in crisis or needed stuff to help them through a difficult moment, in fact Matt Tilley was mentioned by the Beyond Blue representative as still holding the record for raising the most money for their charity so far. I also checked their twitter feed, which is still up, and it mentions how much they raised over the entire time they were on air and it was over 2 million dollars.
