National Box Office: Audiences continue to marvel at Deadpool & Wolverine
Deadpool & Wolverine ruled the National Box Office for a third week in a row, with the Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds juggernaut taking a further $10.3 million to bring its Australian box office total to $47.89 million.
The Marvel film enjoyed the highest-grossing opening since Barbie in Australia, and the biggest opening of the year, taking in $19.9 million at the Australian box office across its Thursday-Sunday opening weekend, including preview screenings.
According to HOYTS, it was the highest-grossing opening weekend for an MA15+ film of all time, and the fourth-highest MCU opening weekend of all time behind Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Avengers: Infinity War. Globally, the film has grossed over US$1 billion.
The Blake Lively-led It Ends With Us brought in $7.1 million in its opening weekend to sit at second place at the box office, while Amazon’s first theatrical release Borderlands, based off a video game and starring Cate Blanchett and Jamie Lee Curtis, opened to $502,000 in its first weekend.
In fourth place is the latest M. Night Shyamalan thriller Trap, which brought in $492,000 in its second weekend.
Twisters added another $479,000 during its fifth week, bringing its cume to $11.54 million, while family favourite Despicable Me 4 and Inside Out 2 took $467,000 and $453,000, respectively.
Elsewhere, Nicholas Cave film Longlegs added $323,000 to its $4.57 million box office, Mandarin comedy Successor took $192,000 in its second week of release, and new release animation 200% Wolf opened to just $117,000.
