Netflix catalogue leaked on Reddit as company undercuts rivals and US offering with pricing
The catalogue of Netflix’s new Australian service appears to have been leaked on online forum Reddit a day before the highly secretive service launches, with its own offerings Orange is the New Black and House of Cards among its shows listed.
The US streaming giant this morning confirmed the leaked prices which will begin with a standard definition plan for one screen at $8.99, two-streams of high-definition content for $11.99 or four-stream on the 4K ultra-high definition “family” plan for $14.99. It goes on sale tomorrow.
With the US dollar at 0.78 cents today the entry price for Netflix in Australia is slightly cheaper than in the US. However, its appears the library is more limited due to other players, such as Foxtel, retaining certain rights in Australia. Netflix is thought to already have between 200,000-300,000 Australian customers who have been accessing the US service via VPN, which overcomes the US geoblock.
The $8.99 price sees Netflix undercutting its rivals with Fairfax Media and Nine Entertainment Co’s joint venture Stan charging $9.99 per month, for three HD streams, and Foxtel’s Presto service charging $14.99 a month for the film and TV package.
At launch Netflix subscribers will enjoy a range of key franchises and content from leading distributors including Warner Bros., BBC, FOX, NBC Universal, Village Roadshow Entertainment, Beyond Distribution, Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and The Walt Disney Company.
However, exclusive content appears to be more limited with its own shows House of Cards, Orange is the New Black and Marco Polo the main drawcards over rivals.
The service also will be available on Fetch TV’s set-top box it will also be available on game consoles, including Sony’s PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Xbox One, and Nintendo’s Wii U.
A free one-month trial of Netflix is available to all new members signing up.
Comment is being sought from Netflix about the veracity of the Reddit leak which can be seen in full below.
Today Telstra also announced it was giving T-Box subscribers a bonus six month unmetered sign up for Foxtel streaming service Presto in a bid to draw subscriber loyalty. Telstra co-owns Foxtel with News Corp, whilst Seven West Media is a partner on the Presto service.
Netflix is being offered unmetered on Fetch-TV on both iiNet and Optus services.

The Aussie dollar is currently trading just under 78c. It hasn’t been 72c since April 2009.

Thanks Spinner, now corrected.
Cheers

I’m suprised by how large the selection is and how reasonably it is priced. I thought due to foxtel and regional deals that the selection would be a lot less.

Yup.. certainly not the 7,200 unique titles that the US has but there’s enough to get us started there. I’m excited.. one more day to go!

“The $8.99 price sees Netflix undercutting its rivals with Fairfax Media and Nine Entertainment Co’s joint venture Stan charging $9.99 per month, for three HD streams”
But to get 3 HD streams from Netflix, you’d need to pay $14.99?

They said previously that Orange is the New Black is licensed to Foxtel still… unless that’s the previous seasons…

I wonder if Game of Thrones will be on the list of titles eventually? Will they continue to increase their selection?

New metadata laws will put a stop to torrenting.

what a sad selection of has-been shows and titles. I cant believe there is so much kids content…. isn’t Youtube enough for that already.

Hey Foxtel, it’s almost here, impending doom awaits your crappy Pay TV station, finally the average Australian will realise just how bad the shitty Foxtel they have been paying a fortune for really is, I am going to sign every one I know with Foxtel up to a free Netflix trial, ha!

Bec Munro, Game of Thrones is a HBO title, direct competition to Netflix. If you have Apple TV HBO Now will show GOT, launches April.

I think I’ll be hanging on to my existing Netflix subscription (in the US) for the time being.
Not that much here that isn’t available on Stan and there are things on Stan that are not here. Will probably keep the International Netflix and Stan. $18 a month for the two is not bad.
Presto is a joke – The Wire was listed as The Good Wife, The episode descriptions were all wrong for one series and you can’t play it through Apple TV (via airplay). Doesn’t work with Safari. Not continuing with that nonsense.

Hey Cannes(d) Laughter… you can shove your metadata laws…. pirating has been illegal on the high seas for years and we all still do it!
Plunder on!
(yo ho yo ho the torrent life for me)

Is that ALL the content. Just those 263 programs? I suppose if you like kids shows or repeats then go for it.

How big of a pipe do you need to stream 4k? No NBN here and ADSL2 is only giving me 11mb.

You could sign up for Netflix, Presto AND Stan for less than $30/month. Or you could spend almost the same amount — $25/month — to get digital access to a single masthead title (the SMH). Ditto for the Australian. The difference in the value propostions is enormous. No wonder the news sites are struggling to build decent digital subscription numbers.
IMO these SVOD services are fantastic value. But they are so cheap, the costs to deliver so high (multi-millions of dollars in content and infrastructure costs), and the addressable audience that will be carved up between them is so small (22m), they will struggle. Unfortunately, because its a great consumer proposition.

This seems to show the full selection it might start out with. We’ll know tomorrow for sure though http://www.kotaku.com.au/2015/03/699355/

If they had fox sports that you could buy by itself for maybe $25-30 a month I reckon every second guy I know would buy that.

Thanks for the report.
I’ve got the US content and I can see programs on it that I can’t see here. Also, this looks like a lot more relative British and Australian weighting of content, which I hate. So it looks like the content is inferior to the US content.

Liam, The Australian is $16 per month and that includes hard copy on Saturdays.

Doesn’t matter how many titles they have in Australia. I can watch all Netflix shows with Unblock-us. Might consider getting an AU account though, looks like it will be cheaper than what I’m paying for my us Netflix account.

Blackbeard the fool, let me know where you work, I’ll pop round and steal all your valuable goods and services, and put you out of a job. Then we’ll see if your still doing pirate impersonations like a 5 year old

Currently using Netflix on Fetch TV – it’s one of the best user experiences I have ever seen. Good riddance Foxtel.

@ JIm, not according to their digital subscriptions page — full (ie non-discounted ) price is shown there as $6/week (but yes that does include weekend print which is thrown in for same price as digital only). Even if it was $16/month, still seems way out of whack in terms of what I can get for $9 or $10/month for these SVOD services.
