New composer collective starts making noise

Seven musicians have launched Sonar, a collective of screen composers to cater to clients across different platforms.

“Each member brings their own strengths, whether it’s film, television or TVC,” partner Antony Partos told Encore. “It’s a place where we can cater for any style and any genre.”

The composers believe their new company Sonar is a unique offering in the industry, and are in the process of securing a space at the Fox Studios lot, where they would meet with clients and work on collaborations, while still retaining their current individual studios.

The founding members – and equal partners – are Antony Partos (Disgrace, Accidents Happen), Andrew Lancaster (also director of Accidents Happen), Jono Ma (from the band Lost Valentinos), David McCormack (from the band Custard), Matteo Zingales (All Saints), Michael Lira and Wes Chew.

Partos said he didn’t know how the score composing community would react to the launch of this collective.

“If people want to do something similar there’s nothing stopping them. It depends on the nature of people’s needs and wants; many composers might cherish their personal space.

“Setting up a collective is exciting, but it has complexities to it. Any joint venture has risks, especially with different characters and personalities, but at least we have an established relationship developed over time,” Partos said.

The most complex task has been establishing the terms of the shareholders agreement, and the company’s terms of trading and according to Partos, the company expects to be successful, but it will also offer flexibility to its partners as their individual careers develop.
