Newcastle Sunday closes after three months
Independent publication Newcastle Sunday has closed after three months and eleven editions, the newspaper announced on the weekend.
Launched by Elwyn Lang, founder of The Weekly newspaper in Mudgee, the newspaper was written by local journalists with the first edition released on July 2.
According to The Australian, the decision has affected 30 reporters, graphic artists, photographers and production staff.
At the time of launch, Lang told ABC Newcastle it would fill a significant gap in the local media market.”
“It’s just filling a hole where there’s no local paper on a Sunday,” Lang said of the publication which had an initial production run of 30,000 copies with a $3 cover charge.
“We have the international, national newspapers, but we don’t have a local paper and this will be 90 per cent local,” Lang stated.
“I’ve had a lot of experience and I’m very passionate about the newspaper game, obviously, we put together a team that is very passionate also.”
Sad to hear it, but at the same time, I had never even heard of the paper. The Newcastle weekly paper (free) seems more than enough anyway.

I wanted to support Newcastle Sunday but only bought two issues (1st/3rd). Content just didn’t reach the mark…can’t explain what I expected from Sunday read but issues left me feeling uninspired.

I am so sorry that the Newcastle Sunday is no longer available. I bought it each week and the content so good it took me a couple of days to read it. The quality of the paper was good, the print didn’t come off onto my hands and it was set out so well, and the price was great.
It was also lovely to see some familiar reporting names .
I am truly sorry it has come to this, perhaps a resurrection down the track.
Congratulations to all who made it happen for a while anyway.
