The return of The Voice has powered Channel Nine to its first win of the official ratings period this year, after losing ten consecutive weeks to rivals Channel Seven.
The first three blind auditions of the singing contest, which kicked off last Sunday, were three of the top four most watched shows of the week in the 11th of 40 official ratings weeks this year, with 1.4m viewers on Monday the best performance. Nine News Sunday was third on the list.
The return of Msterchef also gave Channel Ten a much needed shot in the arm, lifting its audience share for the week to 15% after managing 10.5% last week.
Wednesday’s show, the first not up against The Voice, was the most watched with 1.058m metro viewers, according to OzTam figures.
Seven’s reality show House Rules could not compete with the other franchises with the network relying on the increasing strength of its news proposition to gain traction, with last Sunday’s news at 6pm its best performing show of the week with 1.169m viewers.
Its biggest non-news show was House Rules’ first whole house reveal which had 830,000 viewers, the 19th most watched show of the week.
Overall Nine had an audience share of 19.4%, Seven had 18.8%, Ten was third on 15% ahead of ABC’s 12.3%.
On Saturday Seven News topped the night with 985,000 viewers ahead of Nine News’ 823,000. The ABC’s British drama slate of Father Brown (799,000) and DCI Banks (667,000) also performed well.
Nine will be hoping the extensive media debate around the nominees for the Gold Logies will help power viewer interest in the telecast for TV’s night of nights on Sunday evening, which is set to run from 7.30pm to 11pm.
The Project host Waleed Aly is tipped to take out the top prize on the night.
The rest of the week sees The Voice, Masterchef – with a week featuring Marco Pierre White – and House Rules continuing to slug it out in the important 7.30pm slot, while Seven’s controversial show Seven Year Switch comes to an end on Tuesday.
