Nine’s Australian Ninja Warrior to return to screens on 8 July

The third season of Nine’s Australian Ninja Warrior will return to the channel on Monday July 8, with Nine promising there will be a winner this year.

The show, which has moved production to Melbourne, has yet to crown Australia’s first Ninja Warrior, as a contestant must complete the course to win the title.

But that will all change in season three when Nine promises at least one contestant will do so, winning an extra $200,000 on top of the $100,000 the competitor who goes the furthest through the course in the shortest amount of time receives.

The season will feature a course with new surprises and challenges and be hosted by Rebecca Maddern, Ben Fordham and Freddie Flintoff.

Nine’s head of content production and development, Adrian Swift, said the new season had a new feel.

“With the exciting Melbourne setting and added cash prizes, our Ninjas are desperate to go further than ever before and we will see some truly spectacular feats. The new Ninjas have something to prove. This is their moment, so get ready to be blown away,” said Swift.

Last year’s finale of Ninja Warrior saw 1.139m metro viewers tune in, while the year before pulled 2.145m. The show has been a success story for Nine, something lamented by Seven’s Sonya Wilkes who admitted that the network passed on the show before Nine snapped it up.

Instead, Seven took a chance on Australian Spartan, which premiered to 816,000 in 2018 after Ninja Warrior had premiered to 1.68m in 2017. The show continued to struggle and the final episode aired to just 447,000 metro viewers.

Two hundred contestants will take on the course in 2019, ranging from famous sports stars to mums and dads.

Australian Ninja Warrior will return Monday 8 July 8 at 7:30pm on Nine.
