NRL prepares for season launch with teaser calling for fans to make ‘History Happen’

Less than one week out from its official season launch the NRL has launched a teaser for its 2017 campaign, created by Sydney agency Archibald/Williams.

Cronulla captain Paul Gallen features in the NRL’s season launch teaser

The work continues the ‘History Happens’ theme which debuted last year and taps into the words of legendary coach Jack Gibson who once proclaimed: “Waiting for Cronulla to win the Grand Final is like leaving a porch light on for Harold Holt”.

Thousands of people throughout the shire turned on their porch lights in the lead up to the history making grand final.

The teaser recreates the movement by Cronulla fans who backed the team to its first premiership in the club’s history.

It also highlights how after a number of seasons where just a handful of clubs had dominated the finals, every club in the competition had made a finals appearance since 2009.

NRL general manager of marketing and brand, Peter Jarmain, said the 2017 drive was focused on the fans and the pivotal role they played in the success of their favourite teams.

“Our campaign this year acknowledges the important role fans play in driving their team, and acts as a rallying cry for fans to show their support on game-day,” Jarmain said.

“‘Let’s make history’ is about fans and players coming together, with the opportunity to help take the club all the way to the Grand Final.”

Archibald/Williams executive creative director, Matt Gilmour, said the launch of ‘History Happens’ was particularly satisfying given the outcome of the finals.

“Our campaign this year acknowledges the important role fans play in driving their team, and acts as a rallying cry for fans to show their support on game day,” Gilmour said. ‘Let’s make history’ is about fans and players coming together, with the opportunity to help take the club all the way to the Grand Final.”
