NSW Police Force media head departs after widespread criticism

NSW Police Commissioner, Karen Webb, has parted ways with her head of media following criticism of Webb’s handling of the alleged double murder by serving police officer Beau Lamarre-Condon.

Liz Deegan, who has been executive director of public affairs for the NSW Police Force for 11 months, was told that “her services would no longer be required”.

Prior to the NSW Police Force, Deegan spent over two years at Cato & Clive Partners as a senior advisor, a year at the National Rugby League as chief corporate affairs officer, and over 30 years at News Corp Australia.

In a statement sent to Mumbrella, the NSW Police Force said: “We can confirm the executive director of public affairs has served her last day at NSW Police.

“We’d like to take this opportunity to wish her all the best in her future endeavours and thank her for her contribution to the NSWPF.”

Appearing on Seven’s breakfast program Sunrise late last month, Police Commissioner Webb defended her handling of the alleged double murder of Luke Davies and Jesse Baird after one MP suggested the force had lost confidence in her leadership.

“There will always be haters,” she told the program. “Haters like to hate…isn’t that what Taylor says?”

During her first press conference about the alleged double murder, she also received criticism after describing it as a “crime of passion”.

She later told Nine’s breakfast program Today that she intended to say the alleged crime was not a gay hate crime, but rather one of domestic violence, stalking and murder.
