Nunn Media takes stake in global media agency network Local Planet
Independent media agency Nunn Media has become a shareholder in global media agency network Local Planet, Mumbrella can reveal.
Matthew Nunn, founder and director at Nunn Media, told Mumbrella taking a stake in Local Planet enables the agency to have access to global business “through an extensive referral network of independent media agencies”.
“In addition to that we and our clients will have access to the some of the best media planning and buying proprietary tools. It also shows that independent agencies remain strong and have a significant role to play in the marketing roster of major clients,” Nunn added.
The stake will also see Nunn take one one of the 11 seats on the Local Planet board.
As part of his new role on the board, Nunn will aid the development and success of Local Planet’s global strategy as it enters the next phase of development.
Nunn said the agency has taken a “significant” stake in the global network and will now be the “equal second highest shareholding outside of Horizon Media”.
“The partnership with Local Planet gives us the opportunity to work with global clients in a global network while remaining an independent agency. We have grown to an agency with billings of more than $275 million working only with local clients.
“Unlike other Australian agencies, we have a senior and experienced team that develop integrated media solutions across all channels that drive real business results. We look forward to bringing that expertise to Local Planet clients,” he added.
Nunn said this isn’t the only stake Nunn Media is looking to take in other businesses, with the agency “continually identifying new businesses that will complement our business”.
Local Planet currently has a network of 54 independent media agencies around the world and works with 40 international clients across 67 markets.
Other shareholders include Horizon Media, Pilot, CoSpirit MediaTrack, Zertem Communications, The Media Shop, Tre Kronor and Blue Focus Communications Group.
Martyn Rattle, CEO at Local Planet, added: “Australia is one of the most advanced advertising markets in the world, and we’re delighted the country’s largest independent media agency is
joining our network and that Matthew is joining our Board.
“The opportunities for independent agencies are greater than ever as traditional networks face increasing pressure to evolve. Local Planet is a genuine alternative, offering all the benefits of
independence, but now at scale.”
Great news. Congratulations Matt. Wish you and the team great success.

Please, at what point do you stop being independent?
They are now commercially tied to a global business, headquartered in New York, where they have a 1 in 11 voice at board level.
What happens when he has to resign a big local client for a smaller global client, because the board voted 10 to 1? You aren’t independent just because you aren’t part of a traditional advertising group.

Comparable to IGA and their network of supermarkets.
They are still classified as independent.
Nunn just happens to be the largest and most successful one in VIC.
Great work by Matt Nunn!

Rubbish, independence refers to ownership of the business entity, which has (to my knowledge) never been disclosed by Nunn. Thinkerbell get challenged on being independent all the time, but they have been really clear on who owns what.
IGA by the way are (largely) locally owned stores who pool their resources through a third party to deliver uniformity, group buying power and therefore somewhat compromised choice at a store level (much like every other holding group and agency), which largely defeats the purpose of being independent in the first place – except of course for brand positioning….

Don’t Spotlight Stores own a fair chunk of the Nunn Business??????
