Ocean’s 8 cracks $5m on first box office weekend

The all-female spin-off of Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s trilogy, Ocean’s 8, topped the box office on launch weekend, achieving more than $5m in earnings.

Ocean’s 8, which stars Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Rihanna and Mindy Kaling, follows a group of women led by Debbie (Bullock), the estranged sister of Danny Ocean (George Clooney from the original trilogy), who plan on robbing the Met Gala.

The film was released ahead of the Queen’s Birthday long weekend and achieved $5.55m in earnings across 488 screens. Since its premiere early last week, it has made just over $6m.

Ocean’s 8 premiere weekend proved stronger than Deadpool 2, which fell from last week’s top spot, despite an additional $2.236m in earnings over the weekend.

Deadpool 2 is now showing at just 279 screens, but managed to pull in more than Solo: A Star Wars Story, which is still being shown at 410 locations.

The Star Wars spinoff, which has collected $14.490m since its premiere three weeks ago, made a total of $2.072m over the weekend.

Another film to premiere over the weekend was Studiocanal’s horror film Hereditary, which made $1.142m on its opening weekend. The film is based around the Graham family who, upon the death of the matriarch, unravel cryptic and horrifying secrets about their ancestry.

Marvel film Avengers: Infinity War added $660,165 to total earnings, with 210 screens across Australia. The film has now made $61.050m.
