The announcement:

Metropolitan radio revenue has remained soft with a fall of 3.21 percent in ad revenue for October for the five metropolitan commercial radio markets, to a total of $61.967 million, when compared to the same month last year, according to figures released today by industry body, Commercial Radio Australia.

The 2012 Metropolitan Commercial Radio Advertising Revenue figures, sourced by Deloitte, show total advertising revenue for October compared to the same time frame in 2011, was down in all markets except for Adelaide.

Advertising revenue for October shows Sydney down 4.24% to $18.704 million: Melbourne down 3.16% to $18.820 million, Brisbane down 4.2% to $9.971 million; Perth down 2.26% to $8.466 million and Adelaide up 0.37% to $6.004 million.

Chief executive officer of Commercial Radio Australia, Ms Joan Warner said the results for October were an improvement on September but reflected a softer market since the middle of the year.

“Results for the past few months reflect the challenges facing all media in a tough trading environment. Some markets are more patchy than others and both first quarter and monthly figures reflect this trend,” Ms Warner said.

For the four months YTD until October 2012, ad revenue in Sydney fell 2.26% to a total of $71.526 million; Melbourne fell 5.27% to a total of $68.804 million; Brisbane was down 4.9% to $35.906 million; Adelaide fell 4.57% to $21.408 million and Perth was steady at 0.01% to $30.981 million. For all markets combined, revenue fell 3.52% to a total of $228.628 million.

The Deloitte figures report total metropolitan radio revenue received for each calendar month and include all direct and all agency revenue.
