OMG bumps entry-level employee salary after industry scrutiny

Omnicom Media Group (OMG) has given its entry-level employees a pay rise after questions were raised about its borderline minimum wages for graduates.

Mumbrella revealed in May that OMG offered a graduate salary of $46,875 per year – well below the industry average – which equates to $901.44 a week, or $23.72 on an hourly rate. The figure was said to include superannuation.

Since then, multiple sources said that entry-level employees have received a pay rise, bringing their annual income to between $52,000 and $54,000.

OMG Australia and New Zealand’s CEO, Peter Horgan, did not confirm the number when approached for comment.

“At entry level, we are guided by supply, demand, statutory requirements, and training investment required,” Horgan said.

“We are determined to be competitive on talent and provide long and prosperous careers. The first three years alone sees structured investment in training and salary acceleration.”

One source at OMG said they were glad to see the development, as they said they wouldn’t have been surprised if the company offered the lowest entry-level pay out of all holding groups.

The level of career progression opportunities also depended on which position or account a person is in. “An entry-level employee is more likely to grow in a role with a specific focus like programmatic,” the source said.

OMG’s media agencies include OMD, PHD and Hearts & Science. Its parent group, Omnicom Group, is the second biggest global advertising group by market cap (US$16.72 billion), following Publicis Groupe.

As of July 2023, the national minimum wage has become $882.80 based on a week of 38 ordinary hours, or $23.23 per hour.

The median amount of graduate pay outlined by an internal guide from the Media Federation of Australia (MFA) was $57,300 per year, as seen by Mumbrella in May.
