Outdoor company asks pedestrians to plug in as Nokia livestreams for shoppers
Outdoor firm JC Decaux and communications company iiNet have unveiled an installation to promote the company’s Broadband in a Box product which asks passers by to plug their headphones into the bus shelter to hear more.
The system has been installed at various locations in Sydney and Brisbane.
Consumers who plug in hear a 30 second spiel from “Finn”, the face of the iiNet brand.
Set piece outdoor executions have been a major component of iiNet’s advertising strategy over the last couple of years, including ad takeovers of railway stations.

Meanwhile, in another out of home innovation, Eye has installed outsized Nokia N97 phone displays across its shopping centre network. Each phone features lives feeds taking in state specific information such as news and weather.
Trans-media is alot of fun and I am excited to see Sydney and Brisbane adorn some impressive strides in traditional media innovation the creative message just falls a bit short. The bus shelters might get a little play from consumers interested in the new format but lets just hope when its executed again next we see a stronger audio or maybe even visual message.

Um, I’m sure it’s very clever but does anybody else think it’s a bit odd to promote a wireless internet product by asking people to plug something in? Wouldn’t a branded, loacalised Wi-Fi access point be a better idea?
Just sayin’…

@Adam – totally agree! I started reading the intro, expecting to find a new wireless promo I can pick up, and was somewhat surprised to see you have to plug in.

Its great to see ISPs being creative with their marketing spend.

I love the creative engagement.
Unfortunately the strategy has limited the reach to only locations that are enabled with the headphone jacks. Some very basic telephony technology could have expanded the execution to as many outdoor panels as desired and every consumers personal mobile phones, for one minimal fixed cost.
Not to mention the database of potential customers for iiNet.
