Owner of tech site MacTalk puts it up for sale
Australian technology site MacTalk is for sale, with founder and owner Anthony Agius seeking bids in excess of $125,000.
Agius told Mumbrella: “After six years of running the site and three years full time, I want my life back.”
MacTalk – which started life as AppleTalk Australia – offers an Australian perspective on Apple computers including news, reviews and a regular podcast.
The site currently sees traffic of about 1.5m page impressions per month.
Agius told Mumbrella that he had put the site up for sale on website marketplace Flippa after his emails to a number of Australian publishers were not returned. He is looking to conclude the sale within the next fortnight or so.
In a blog post on his reasons for the sale, Agius said: “The idea of selling MacTalk has been in the back of my mind for months. Each day I ask myself “do I still give a fuck about this?” and each day I respond with “yes”, but with less enthusiasm each time. It’s got to the point now, where the answer is becoming “I’m not sure”, and will probably turn into “no, not really”.
A surprisingly honest admission that his interest in his site, which he is trying to sell, is waning
I thought selling something like this would mean he needs to up sell its future, not admit his declining interest?

I’ve dealt with Anthony for… wow, nearly 3 years now, from when I was running the Apple affiliate programme. He’s a pleasure to chat to, honest and transparent in his dealings, and really cares about the users of the site, which has excellent content and ranks well in SEO.
He’s passionate enough that he’s kept the integrity of the MacTalk and turns down a lot more advertising opportunities than he takes (and even tells users “yes, this is an advert, but you buying through this link helps MacTalk), and I’d say it’s definitely worth the asking price.
Good on you Anthony, and good luck with whatever else comes next.

I agree with you @Anon – it will be harder to find a buyer who’ll be able to provide a similar or fare greater offering and service. It’s an awesome offering ATM but when a site takes over your life – it’s time to sell. If our web Transfer pillar had a spare $125K rolling around we’d happily make Anthony an offer.

Have followed this site from when it was AppleTalk back in the day, its a solid site with a passionate community. Good luck with the sale.

Anon,
I don’t think Anthony isn’t upselling the future of the site, just his involvement. I’m sure he knows MacTalk has lots of places to grow and would love to see it do just that.
Admitting how he feels personally is actually just a very honest response. Even good things have to come to an end somethings.

Wow, $72k estimated yearly profit, and minimum bid is only $125k? If someone dedicated buys this and doesn’t stuff up the community, they could push profits up maybe another 25% with some slight tweaks… nice little earner, that. Though hard work, I’m sure.
