Peter Campbell to lead Fox Sports as Foxtel CEO Patrick Delany rejigs management team

Fox Sports has appointed acting COO Peter Campbell to lead the sports channel as part of Foxtel CEO Patrick Delany’s customer acquisition drive ahead of a planned stock market float later this year.

Along with Campbell taking the helm at Fox Sports, Delany also announced that former Nine GM Amanda Laing will be appointed Foxtel’s chief commercial officer and Sky Deutschland executive Euan Smith will take the COO role.

Cambell: Set to lead Fox Sports

Laing had been working with Foxtel as a consultant since April after leaving Nine last year.  During her tenure at Nine she had been a key figure in the network’s negotiations for the 2015 NRL broadcast rights deal.

New COO Smith joined Sky Deutschland in 2010 from UK subscription-TV service BSkyB with a mandate to improve the German operator’s customer service as part of a customer acquisition push.

The chief operating officer role at Foxtel was abolished by former Foxtel CEO Richard Freudenstein as part of a ‘flattening’ of the subscription-TV service’s operating structure in 2015. That reorganisation saw then COO Rohan Lund leave the business and later become chief executive officer of the NRMA.

Joining Smith and Laing will be former Amysim CEO, Julian Ogrin who will be in charge of the company’s IP strategy and working on features to attract more subscribers ahead of a planned stock market listing later this year.

The appointments follow former Asia Pacific Digital’s group head of performance and media John Matthews joining Fox Sports as director of customer acquisition last week.

Campbell was the AFL’s general manager of media and broadcasting for four years before rejoining Fox Sports in June last year.

Delany’s announcement:

I’d like to share these with you as they reinforce the next generation leadership of Foxtel and FOX SPORTS as it continues to build Australia’s best sports and entertainment content company.

Peter Campbell will be appointed as Head of Fox Sports (FSA) to lead FSA into the future.  Pete has been acting in the role of Chief Operating Officer for Fox Sports since Patrick was appointed CEO of Foxtel.

Amanda Laing will take on the role of Chief Commercial Officer (CCO).  Amanda will be responsible for the development and execution of content strategy and negotiations; partnerships and all major commercial relationships. In addition to this, Amanda will take on responsibility for Foxtel’s Telstra and other Wholesale relationships.

Julian Ogrin is joining the business reporting into Patrick to head up the group’s IP strategy. He will work with Patrick and his team to help accelerate the company’s goal of developing the world’s best streaming products for Australian consumers.  He joins Foxtel from telecommunications company amaysim where he has been managing director and CEO since 2015. Mr Ogrin joined amaysim in 2013 as chief commercial officer. Mr Delany said Julian’s background and experience will bring a deep and rich understanding of consumer behaviours to the business. He understands what consumers want, what they’re willing to pay for, and how to deliver products and services to them in the best possible way, Mr Delany said. He will start his new role in late July.

These appointments complement the two recent additions to the company’s executive leadership team – Euan Smith, as chief operating officer and James Marsh as chief financial officer.
