Peter Fray takes up university position
Former editor-in-chief and publisher of The Sydney Morning Herald Peter Fray has been appointed an adjunct professor with The University of Sydney.
Fray will join the School of Media and Communications in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences and will undertake research in collaboration with The Institute of Democracy and Human Rights.
His new role will also see the journalist, who left Fairfax in June, take up a postgraduate teaching role.
“It’s a pretty exciting time in the media space,” Fray said, “and I think the academy has a big role to play in redefining the future.
“The university is the perfect place to broaden and deepen my many projects, especially those in the media/politics space.”
Ahead of the 2013 Federal election Fray is working on an Australian version of Politfact.com, a Pulitizer prize winning political fact-checking website, that will detail lies by federal and state politicians.
The 28 year veteran of journalism has been editor or editor-in-chief of four metropolitan mastheads, including The Sydney Morning Herald, The Canberra Times and The Sunday Age.

No doubt he can teach all those naive young media students the vast difference between a ‘tabloid’ and a ‘compact’, which I once understood to be either a Ford Corsair or a case containing a ladies’ powderpuff and mirror.

This is arguably irrelevant to the debate, however Peter bares a striking resemblance to the guy who does the “it’s just a jump to the left” in The Rocky Horror Picture Show soundtrack….
