PHD Melbourne celebrates eighth birthday virtually

PHD Melbourne has celebrated its eighth birthday on a video call, featuring a custom Zoom background and trivia.

The announcement:

PHD Melbourne has always celebrated its birthday with an annual dinner party for its people, clients and partners. Held in early May every year, the company has never broken with tradition since its first birthday celebration in 2013. This year, despite the current situation, PHD Melbourne decided it was important to keep the tradition alive, even if the way it is celebrated changes.

“Whilst we’ve all been in crisis mode for the past two months, and the news around us has been so negative, we thought it was more important than ever for our organisational culture to mark this occasion, just like we would any other year,” said PHD Melbourne’s General Manager, Simon Lawson.

The birthday celebration went ahead via video conference last Friday (May 15), with all attendees wearing a splash of purple and featuring custom-made Zoom backgrounds for the agency’s eighth birthday. Guests from UnLtd, the industry’s social purpose organisation even put on a special edition of Backyard Trivia centring on the year 2012, PHD Melbourne’s first year of operations. The celebrations also featured a video montage of staff, sharing personal testimonials about the agency and what they miss most while working from home.

Ever since opening its doors in 2012, with 15 staff onboard and ANZ as its foundation client, PHD’s Melbourne office has grown five-fold, comprising over 80 staff today and a blue-chip client roster that still includes ANZ, as well as CUB, 7-Eleven, AFL, Porsche and Priceline.

In support of UnLtd’s #AdsAtHome competition calling on agencies to recreate major ads while working from home, the birthday celebration also saw the launch of PHD Melbourne’s submission, recreating the classic 1999 Budweiser commercial, “Whassup Bud”.
