George Patterson Y&R Melbourne has named Mark Watkin as head of the agency’s account service team.

Watkin has been with the agency for six years, the last two as group account director on Defence Force Recruiting, which the agency recently retained following a hotly contested pitch. Watkin has also headed up AFL, James Boag’s, and Yellow Pages and launched the Victorian Government Black Balloons campaign in 2006.

“Mark has lead the Defence Force Recruiting team with great professionalism, passion and skill. His leadership during the tender process was extraordinary and he deserves the recognition of this appointment. He will continue to lead the DFR team,” says GPY&R National CEO Russel Howcroft.

Originally from the UK, Watkin worked there at Saatchi & Saatchi and digital agency Hyperlink. A keen sportsman, he won a commonwealth gold for rowing in 2002 and won at Henley Royal Regatta. Since ‘retiring’ from rowing he’s taken up more leisurely pursuits, becoming a three times Ironman Triathlon finisher and completing the 87km Comrades Ultra Marathon in South Africa.

“I’m really happy to take this role. It’s a great time to be with George Patterson Y&R Melbourne. We have talented people working with some great clients and brands. I’m looking forward to helping the agency continue to grow and making the best work with our clients. The agency is really making inroads on real brands and briefs,” says Watkin.
