Publishers Australia Bell Awards – social media? Nothing but lights on a Xmas tree!
To Publishers Australia’s Bell Awards, where CEO Alan Sarkissian had a high opinion of social media.
“It’s not about tweeting or twatting or whatever it’s called – just adding bling and light globes to the Christmas tree. What we are looking for is excellence,” Sarkissian told the audience.
I think it’s a bit lame when detractors pretend they don’t know the term “tweeting” even though it’s obvious that they do.

But I must admit, I think I would enjoy Twatting a bit more than my Twitter antics!

Sound like Alan might have a head start in twatting …

Contagious (www.contagiousmagazine.com) issue 20 covers Twitter/Social Media as a viable PR tool and customer service resource. Case in point look at Best Buy or Zappos out of the US.

Love twitting and twatting… Wasn’t being condescending just meant people have to be deeper thinkers these days and that way gain competitive advantage. i agree is viable tool. We must work with or brands, content and audience… know direct of that first and then use “tools” in with that.

The Bell awards? About as prestigious as a cold weak lemon drink in a car on a rainy day, freezing, wet and bored…

Without a doubt the worst awards ceremony I have attended…more time devoted to sponsor’s speeches, a terrible venue, some dubious choices for magazine honours (come on who reads Cosmos??) and to top it all having a cash bar after kicking everyone outside – if there was a rasberry for worst awards, it would have to go to the Bell awards!

Alan, sorry mate…I suggest you start using social media before commenting on the subject.
Yes, it’s a tool, but it can be a competitive advantage as well because CEO’s like yourself don’t understand it and can’t be bothered to investigate the possibilities.

Hence my previous comment. Zappos, follow their CEO online. Very funny chap!

Who doesn’t love the “Magazines You’ve Never Heard Of” awards ceremony. It was thrilling.
And excruciating.
Anyhow I have had my rants about bell awards and Publishers Australia in the past. It’s nice to see a magazine with a Roy Morgan number (cosmos) win magazine of the year. Although to be fair I suspect that the people at Lunar media spend about 50% of the year producing a magazine and the other 50% entering into every category for these awards.
I am sure that Lunar media are a good publishing company. But if they were THAT good, they would have actually launched some profitable magazines and had some brands the rest of us are familiar with. They did launch “G” two years ago, and it won a stack of awards but is now gone to the magazine rack in the sky.
c’mon guys. How many awards has Lunar won in the last 5 years? 10? 20? Surely there are other publisher out there that are doing all right? Or is it just the same old people entering year after year?
Also – there was a publishing company their called “The Dingoes Refrain”. I though that was great. Very web 3.0
