PwC looks to communist Russia for marketing lessons
Dr Mumbo knows all historical figures worth writing about are divisive, and that history is written by the victors – but even he was surprised by PwC’s chosen spokesperson at the AANA Media Challenge event.
Who better to advocate for brands and marketers taking back control than communist revolutionary / mass murderer Vladimir Lenin?
“Trust is good, control is better,” said Sunita Gloster, director of PwC’s CMO Advisory, quoting Lenin. “So said Lenin, and so said P&G in Orlando. The direction and tone to the marketer here is not alarmist anymore. It’s simply taking control is being involved and being informed. From that comes the solutions for uncovering waste and business intelligence to do better – consistent with the position the AANA has always taken on this subject, which is that it is the advertisers that have to satisfy themselves that the terms of their contractual agreements meet their overall transparency needs.”
Dr Mumbo suspects that is precisely not what Lenin was referring to when he concocted his famous line, and wonders if the communist revolutionary would appreciate the irony of being quoted to motivate a room full of capitalists to sell more goods and earn more money.
