Radio bosses, editors, marketers and agency chiefs join Mumbrella360 for focus on media

m360Some of the most senior players within the Australian media industry can today be announced as part of the lineup Mumbrella360, as we reveal another four major sessions for the conference, all themed around the media.

Mumbrella360 takes place in a fortnight’s time, on June 5 and 6 at the Hilton Hotel in Sydney.

There will be a high profile panel featuring the bosses of Australia’s major radio networks in conversation about the challenges faced by the indystry. A further panel will developing publishing models from  people involved in developing alternative models at first hand. Another will explore the future of media regulation. Also being revealed for the first time will be a survey of media industry sentiment – and discussion of what it means.

The commercial radio panel will feature Cathy O’Connor, who is CEO of DMG which owns Nova and smoothfm; Ciaran Davies, CEO, Australian Radio Network which owns the Mix and Classic Hits networks;  Adam Lang, who is CEO of Fairfax Media’s radio group which include high profile talk sations 3AW in Melbourne and 2UE in Sydney; and Russell Tate, CEO, Macquarie Radio Network, parent company of 2GB.

In a discussion moderated by Mumbrella’s Tim Burrowes, the quartet will looks to the future via the lessons from one of the most dramatic years in the radio industry’s history. Tate rewrote the social media playbook in his handling of the station’s Alan Jones crisis; the major global music streaming brands launched in Australia and partnered with the networks; video content became a central part of most networks’ content strategies. The panel will also take questions from the audience.

We can reveal that CommBank chief marketing officer Andy Lark has been using part of the brand’s multi-million dollar marketing budget as an informal media innovation fund – designed to promote independent new media projects. As well as supporting “extraordinary people” magazine Dumbo Feather. Lark’s support was also credited with being a major factor in the launch of Messenger Collective magazine, now rebadged as Renegade Collective. Founding edior Lisa Messenger will be on the panel discussing her journey.

Also joining the debate is Campbell Reid, group editorial director of News Limited, which this month began its move to metered paywalls.

Andrew Jaspan, founder of The Conversation will discuss his unique fundig model days after returning from the launch of the site in the UK.

And Mumbrella co-founder Tim Burrowes will discuss parent company Focal Attractions’ new media model.

The debate will be moderated by Geoff Hird, chairman of industry body Publishers Australia and publisher at Westwick-Farrow Media.

A panel of marketers, publishers and media agency bosses discuss the results of an exclusive survey of industry sentiment carried out by Mediascope and TrinityP3. The session will be moderated by Darren Woolley, managing director at TrinityP3 and Denise Shrivell, managing director, MediaScope.

Press regulation in the real world

At last year’s Mumbrella360, the media convergence review loomed as the panel discussed the future of self regulation. Press Council chairman Prof Julian Disney returns for a discussion on how press regulation will work in practical terms now media minister Stephen Conroy has been forced to drop his plans. In a session moderated by Mumbrella’s Tim Burrowes, also on the panel will be Gabriel McDowell, MD of PR agency Res Publica, who will offer a real world perspective on how to handle an issue when a brand or person believes they have been unfairly treated. ninemsn’s Hal Crawford will offer a perspective as an online member of the Press Council.
