Radio ratings – Melbourne: Three-way battle for top FM breakfast show

melbourne monday sunday share survey 5Nova’s Dave Hughes and Kate Langbroek came close to overtaking Fox FM’s duo of Matt Tilley and Jo Stanley in the battle for breakfast in Melbourne.

According to the latest ratings from Nielsen, Hughesy & Kate rose from a 6.9 per cent share to 8.3 per cent, while Matt & Jo fell from 9.2 per cent to 8.4 per cent but just hung on to second spot.

However, Triple M’s Hot Breakfast – presented by Eddie McGuire, Mick Molloy and Luke Darcy – remained in top FM slot, despite a slight fall in share from 9.5 per cent to 8.9 per cent.

Triple M content director Mike Fitzpatrick said in a statement: “The show is as Melbourne as building a giant ferris wheel that doesn’t turn. It’s as Melbourne as overpriced pies at the footy. It’s as Melbourne as almost 4 million people sharing the same cold for 6 months of the year. Eddie connects our listeners to the city. Mick is peaking. There’s no-one funnier on radio right now. Darc brings a footy insight like no-one else on brekky radio. What a great show.”

Paul Jackson, group programming director of Nova’s parent company DMG, said: “To be just 0.1 off Fox when they’ve spent zillions on marketing is quite something.”

Meanwhile, the 5.30am to 9am audience is still dominated by AM talk station 3AW with a share of 19.4 per cent, just ahead of ABC774’s 14.8 per cent. In the 9am to noon slot, 3AW’s share is 14.2 per cent, behind ABC 774’s 15.5 per cent.

Although the programme times do not directly match the audience breakdowns, 3AW’s Ross Stevenson and John Burns run from 5.30 to 8.30 and Neil Mitchell from 8.30 to noon. ABC774’s morning lineup runs from Breakfast with Red Symons from 5.35am, to the national AM with Tony Eastley at 8am, to Mornings with Jon Faine from 8.30am.

The top slot in drive 4-7pm is now a dead heat between 3AW’s Tom Elliott, whose audience rose from 11 to 11.6 per cent, and Fox FM’s national Fifi & Jules show which fell slightly from 12.2 per cent to 11.6 per cent. Elliott took on the slot late last year after the sacking of Derryn Hinch.

3AW’s GM Shane Healy said: “For Tom to be within a whisker of top spot in his first year shows his natural talent and supports our belief that he will be a long-term success.”

In overall share, 3AW remains top in Melbourne with 13.5 per cent. Fox FM is top FM commercial station, with a share of 8.9 per cent, down from 10 per cent.
